Ethical dilemmas when elective
surgery is cancelled
Planned
operations are sometimes cancelled when the health care system is overwhelmed
by emergency cases. When this happens, hospitals lose money, wait lists grow
and efficiency decreases. At the same time, a group of patients who have
prepared mentally for a daunting, dangerous and potentially deadly procedure
are informed their surgery is cancelled. According
to a group of researchers at Uppsala University, Karolinska Institutet and
the Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge, this has ethical,
psychological, and medical consequences. The results have been published in
the latest issue of Clinical Ethics. Read press
release from Uppsala University > Article: Magnusson H, Felländer-Tsai L, Hansson MG and

Improving the ethical climate in
psychiatric outpatient care
The
Centre for Research Ethics & Bioethics (CRB) has received
1 513 000 SEK from AFA Insurance for a collaboration with the
Uppsala County Council to investigate whether supervised ethical rounds can
improve the ethical climate in psychiatric outpatient clinics. The project was developed
as a result of existing collaborations between CRB, the Uppsala County
Council and Akademiska Sjukhuset (Uppsala University Hospital). Press

Study Neuroethics online!
We
continue to offer our popular web-based course in neuroethics. This English
language course gives a multi-disciplinary approach to questions concerning
empirical brain sciences, philosophy of mind, moral philosophy, ethics and
the social sciences. It is relevant for a broad range of graduate students
and professionals in health care, natural and social sciences, medicine, law,
philosophy, psychiatry and more. The
course deals with the neurology of ethics rather than ethical issues in
clinical neurology and the lectures feature prominent researchers in
neuroscience and philosophy. This is a
7,5 credit part time distance course that allows students to do the
coursework when it suits them best. Please note that for the first time,
students outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland are required to pay application and
tuition fees. Priority will be given to applications received before August
15. Application
