Research: Autonomy

In June 2006 we arranged a symposium on informed consent and autonomy. The symposium "Rethinking Informed Consent: The limits of autonomy" particularly focused on the role given to autonomy in the standard view. It pondered whether informed consent as applied gives sufficient room for all interests and values involved in health care and biomedical research. The symposium was part of the series of annual multi-disciplinary research symposia on Biomedicine, Ethics and Society.

People are often willing to participate in biobank research in spite of concerns raised in media about potential risks to personal integrity. Moreover, information about the research is often disregarded by participants. This suggests a connection between autonomy and trust; however, neither the nature of this connection nor the relative importance of these concepts is clear. In a PhD project entitled "Autonomy and trust in biobank research", Linus Johnsson, MD looks at the the concepts of autonomy and trust, their role in informed consent procedures elucidated, and their ethical value.
