New senior lecturer: Stefan Eriksson

Stefan Eriksson
Associate Professor of Research Ethics, Senior lecturer
We are happy to announce that the Faculty of Medicine has appointed a new senior lecturer in research ethics, Stefan Eriksson. He received his doctoral degree on a dissertation regarding Wittgenstein's influence on philosophy of religion (1999). In January 2010 Stefan was appointed Associate Professor of Research Ethics.
Stefan has been with the Centre for Research Ethics & Bioethics since 2000. His research deals with issues such as informed consent and autonomy, biobank ethics, and the function and impact of research ethics codes. He also serves as editor of CODEX - a web resource run by the Swedish Research Council.
Being both a researcher and PhD student supervisor, Stefan Eriksson stresses the importance of gaining the skills necessary for ethical reflection:
– Researchers can never rely on rules and guidelines alone. We need ethical competence ourselves in order to use guidelines and have to take responsibility for our own research. We also need competence to take part in the ongoing debate on research integrity and science ethics in the scientific community.
As senior lecturer, his main responsibility will be to teach ethics to PhD students. At the faculties of medicine, pharmacy, technology and natural sciences, research ethics is a compulsory part of the curriculum for PhD students. The centre offers a course tailored to the social sciences and we are currently planning one for the humanities.
At CRB we are delighted to make use of Stefan Eriksson’s unique competence. He will continue to develop the tailored course curriculums for PhD students. But students at the faculties where no tailored courses are offered need not fear: the 1 credit course Research Ethics A is open for PhD students from all faculties!
