Researcher

Joar Björk (MD, PhD) is a physician working in palliative care, and a clinical ethicist. Joar Björk’s research deals with ethical issues in health care priority setting as well as in the interaction with patients who have diminished capacity for self-governance. In a present project at CRB, focus is on the use of coercive methods outside of compulsory psychiatric health care. Another project investigates health care personnel’s interpretation of patient autonomy in cases where the patient seems to have self-contradictory preferences. The research uses empirical as well as ethical methods to provide a comprehensive understanding of these very complex issues.

Joar Björk’s PhD project was on the ethical relevance of patients’ responsibility for their health in priority setting decisions.
